General Sudirman, as the first Commander of the TNI, has left a powerful legacy for future generations of TNI soldiers. His heroism and leadership during Indonesia’s Independence movement have established a tradition of pure heroism within the TNI.
Born in Purbalingga on January 24, 1916, General Sudirman was a teacher before joining the military. He played a crucial role in the formation of the PETA, a self-defence military organization formed during the Japanese occupation. Alongside other future TNI leaders, Sudirman received training and quickly rose through the ranks.
During the fight for independence, General Sudirman led his battalion in seizing key territories from British forces. His determination and courage earned him the respect of his fellow soldiers and the Indonesian people. Despite facing health challenges, Sudirman continued to lead and inspire others to resist the Dutch incursion.
In 1948, when the Dutch attacked Yogyakarta, General Sudirman urged President Sukarno to lead a guerrilla war. However, Sukarno refused, and Sudirman took matters into his own hands, leading the resistance against the Dutch forces. His actions boosted the morale of the nation and ultimately led to the TNI gaining the upper hand.
General Sudirman’s leadership in the face of adversity demonstrated his strong personality, courage, and sacrifice for the nation. His legacy serves as a reminder of the selfless dedication required to ensure the nation’s interests and honor. Through his actions, Sudirman solidified the TNI’s reputation as a force willing to sacrifice everything for the nation’s glory.
