President of the United States, Donald Trump, has indicated that he will extend the deadline for Bytedance to divest TikTok in the US if no agreement is reached by June 19. This is the second time Trump has postponed the enforcement of the ban on TikTok, which was initially set for January but has been extended.
Trump expressed his desire to see the deal happen during an interview with NBC News, stating that he has a fondness for TikTok after the app helped him win the hearts of young voters in the 2024 presidential election. He emphasized the need to protect the app while highlighting the ongoing negotiations.
A deal had been reached to separate TikTok’s operations in the US into a new American-based company majority-owned and operated by US investors. However, the deal was delayed after China indicated reluctance to approve it following Trump’s announcement of high tariffs on Chinese goods.
Democratic senators have raised concerns about the legality of Trump’s authority to extend the deadline, questioning whether the proposed deal meets legal requirements. Despite ongoing talks between US investors and ByteDance, obstacles remain unresolved due to trade disputes between the White House and Beijing.
In the interview, Trump mentioned China’s eagerness to reach a deal, citing the impact of the 145% tariffs on Chinese goods on the US economy. While he asserted his stance on not lowering tariffs specifically for TikTok negotiations, he implied a possible reduction as part of a broader agreement in the future.
It is noteworthy that Biden’s administration has set a deadline for TikTok to cease operations on January 19 unless ByteDance completes the divestment of its US assets. Trump opted not to enforce this rule during his second term, initially extending the deadline to early April and subsequently to June 19.
