Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup made its debut in the US in 2021 and has since become a solid alternative to the Ford Maverick. Although not a true pickup truck, it is essentially a Tucson with a bed. However, Hyundai has now confirmed the production of a truly capable pickup truck, although it may not be for America.
Hyundai Australia’s CEO, Don Romano, confirmed the development of a new medium-sized ute, or pickup truck, that will compete with body-on-frame alternatives in the region such as the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and its cousin, the Kia Tasman. Romano stated in an interview that he is confident a ute will be on the schedule, but the timing is uncertain, depending on the type of ute they are developing.
The details of the new pickup truck are still unclear, according to Romano, including the powertrain options which could include diesel, hybrid, or even full electric. With Australia’s increasingly stringent emission regulations, sharing a platform with the Tasman seems unlikely, but Hyundai may seek assistance from General Motors, with whom they recently signed an agreement for joint truck and van production.
Hyundai aims to start production of its new pickup truck in Australia within the next three years. As for the Santa Cruz, don’t expect major changes to this compact pickup truck in the US. The small truck has just received a refresh.
