Prabowo Prioritizes Indonesian Workers in U.S. Tariff Talks

President Prabowo Subianto has reiterated that the Indonesian government thoroughly evaluated various factors before engaging in negotiations with the United States to reduce import tariffs from 32% to 19%. He highlighted that the utmost priority during the discussions was to protect the interests of the Indonesian people, particularly the nation’s workforce.

“We have analyzed all aspects and conducted negotiations. What matters most to me is the welfare of our people. I must ensure the protection of our workers,” Prabowo told reporters at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Despite facing challenges, Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia remained steadfast in its position throughout the negotiations.

“We have taken a firm stance. This is our offer—we cannot compromise further. However, the crucial point is to safeguard the welfare of our workers,” he emphasized.

The president also expressed confidence in Indonesia’s economy, describing it as robust, resilient, and well-equipped to withstand global uncertainties, including ongoing trade tensions.

“I am highly optimistic. Our economy is strong and resilient. Regardless of the circumstances, we will remain steady,” he affirmed.

Regarding the tariff discussions with the U.S., Prabowo characterized the negotiations as tough but ultimately fruitful. Both sides reached a mutual understanding after recognizing each other’s strategic interests.

“We have acknowledged their priorities, and they have understood ours. This led to a mutual agreement,” he explained.

“The tariff has been successfully reduced from 32% to 19%. I continued negotiations—I engaged with [U.S. President Donald] Trump, a formidable negotiator himself,” he added.

Previously, President Trump had announced a trade deal with Indonesia, confirming the reduction of tariffs on Indonesian goods to 19%.
