President Prabowo Subianto has received praise for his decision to grant amnesty and abolition to PDI-P Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto and businessman Tom Lembong. This move is widely regarded as a step towards national reconciliation and unity. Senior politician Fahri Hamzah commended President Prabowo for his quick and thoughtful response to address societal divisions ahead of Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day celebrations.
Fahri highlighted the significance of House Speaker Prof. Sufmi Dasco Ahmad’s prompt action in line with the President’s signal to promote social harmony and begin a broader reconciliation process. He emphasized that President Prabowo’s use of his constitutional prerogative is a positive development, especially amidst attempts by certain groups to sow discord.
The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) approved the amnesty for 1,116 individuals, including Hasto Kristiyanto, in line with Presidential Letter No. 42/Pres/072725 dated July 30, 2025. Amnesty and abolition, as forms of the President’s prerogative rights under the Indonesian Constitution, serve to remove legal consequences from criminal convictions.
Fahri expressed hope that President Prabowo’s exercise of constitutional power will be perceived as a genuine effort to unite the nation and combat societal fragmentation. This step towards national reconciliation is seen as a positive move in restoring harmony and fostering unity among the Indonesian people.
