LEADERSHIP OF INDONESIAN NATIONAL LEADER: RADEN MAS TUMENGGUNG ARIO SOERJO, GOVERNOR SURYO

Prabowo Subianto’s excerpts from the book Military Leadership Notes from Experience Chapter I talks about the important role played by Governor Suryo in the historical Battle of Surabaya on November 10, 1945. Despite not being a soldier or military personnel, Governor Suryo understood the historical responsibility he had in defending his homeland and representing his people. He displayed great leadership qualities by making tough decisions and acting decisively to protect the honor of his nation.

The Battle of Surabaya was a significant event in Indonesian history, fought between the young people and madrasa students of Surabaya against the British Army. Lasting for three weeks, the battle resulted in the deaths of over 16,000 Indonesian fighters and the displacement of 200,000 civilians. This heroic battle is commemorated every November 10th as Heroes’ Day in Indonesia.

Governor Suryo’s pivotal decision to reject the British ultimatum and rally the people of Surabaya to defend their city marked the beginning of the historic battle. His calm yet resolute speech on the radio mobilized everyone to take up arms in defense of Surabaya. Despite not having the fiery oratory skills of Bung Tomo, Governor Suryo’s leadership was equally powerful in inspiring the masses to fight for their sovereignty.

Ultimately, Governor Suryo’s decision to stand against the British forces and uphold Indonesia’s sovereignty symbolized the nation’s courage and determination to not be colonized again. His leadership during the Battle of Surabaya demonstrated the unwavering spirit of the Indonesian people in defending their independence and honoring their nation’s sovereignty.
