President Prabowo Subianto strongly criticized corrupt practices in Indonesia’s rice trade, promising to take action against companies that manipulate and increase the price of subsidized rice. During the 27th anniversary of the National Awakening Party (PKB), the President disclosed that these fraudulent activities result in annual losses of up to Rp100 trillion for the country. He pointed out the irony of subsidizing various aspects of rice production, only to have the final product repackaged as “premium rice” and sold at much higher prices. Prabowo highlighted that 212 rice milling companies have been identified for engaging in such deceitful practices and emphasized the need for them to return the ill-gotten profits. Describing this behavior as criminal and a violation of the Constitution, he emphasized the significant impact of these losses on public services and infrastructure development. The President has directed the National Police Chief and Attorney General to take swift action against these companies, emphasizing that his actions are driven by the constitutional obligation to protect vital sectors that impact the people’s well-being. This crackdown is aimed at upholding the integrity of the rice distribution system and ensuring fairness and transparency in the trade.
