Professor Hikmahanto Juwana, an expert in International Relations (IR), commended the Indonesian government’s proactive actions led by Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto in response to the emergency situation in Gaza, Palestine. He believes that Indonesia has emerged as the most significant contributor of concrete assistance to Gaza compared to other countries.
During the High-Level Emergency Response Summit for Gaza in Amman, Jordan, Prabowo’s strong stance was highlighted by Hikmahanto as the most substantial and courageous among the attending nations. Indonesia’s commitment goes beyond rhetoric, as they have prepared plans to accommodate and provide treatment and education for 1,000 patients and students from Gaza in Indonesia. This proactive approach is expected to draw attention and concern from the United States and Israel.
Hikmahanto emphasized that Indonesia’s actions are not merely symbolic but are aimed at influencing Israel and its ally, the United States, to cease the ongoing acts of genocide in Gaza. The hope is that the pressure exerted by Indonesia, particularly through Prabowo’s initiatives at the summit, will prompt other countries to take similar concrete steps.
He envisions a humanitarian coalition forming as a result of Prabowo’s efforts, emphasizing that global unity based on humanitarian principles is crucial in halting Israel’s actions in Gaza. Hikmahanto believes that by prioritizing humanity, a broad coalition of support can be garnered, ultimately leading to positive change in the region.
