Pak Wismoyo Arismunandar was a commander who had a significant influence on me. His teachings have left a lasting impact on me personally. One of the key lessons he imparted to his men was the importance of always thinking good, doing good, and speaking well. He emphasized the need to avoid harboring ill thoughts towards others, a teaching that has stuck with me throughout the years. His values were deeply rooted in Indonesian culture and the TNI ethos.
He believed that brave men should be happy and that a leader should uplift his men through various activities such as singing, sports, and group interactions. He understood that creating a positive and spirited environment was essential for maintaining high morale among his troops. Despite facing ridicule from some for his attention to seemingly trivial matters like hand clapping, I believed that he was right in emphasizing the importance of such small gestures in fostering happiness and unity among his men.
Pak Wismoyo’s teachings also emphasized the importance of discipline, loyalty, and honor. He believed in giving second chances to those who made mistakes and preached against speaking ill of others. He led by example, participating in activities with his men and pushing them to excel in various sports and marksmanship.
I vividly remember an incident where he joined us in a parachute jump training exercise in Lampung, despite his injured knee. He showed a willingness to get his hands dirty and actively engage with his troops, setting a powerful example for us to follow. His commitment to sports and marksmanship inspired me to hone my shooting skills, a crucial aspect of being a member of the Infantry Corps.
Pak Wismoyo’s lessons on leadership and camaraderie have stayed with me throughout my military career. His emphasis on creating a happy and cohesive unit through shared activities and a positive atmosphere has shaped my approach to leadership. I strive to emulate his example of forgiveness, humility, and dedication to the well-being of my troops. His teachings continue to guide me in my role as a leader, reminding me of the importance of discipline, loyalty, and honor in all aspects of my life.
