MBG: Free Nutritious Meals Boost Children’s Concentration

The Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) Program has been proven to have a positive impact on children’s concentration levels, as evidenced by short-term memory assessments. This improvement is expected to boost students’ learning motivation over time. Research conducted in Aceh showed that students who received Free Nutritious Meals exhibited enhanced concentration, which is a promising sign for better educational outcomes and increased motivation to learn. This finding was shared by Ikeu Tanziha, an Expert Council Member of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), during a press conference in Jakarta on a recent Monday. Another study by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) also showed similar results, with the MBG program enhancing learning focus and cognitive performance among students in Bogor and Papua, particularly those who skipped breakfast. A specific case study at State Vocational School 6 (SMK Negeri 6) in Medan demonstrated that the MBG program significantly improved attendance motivation and concentration in the classroom. Ikeu emphasized the importance of concentration in relation to attention and the brain’s cognitive functions, which are vital for a child’s cognitive development during their formative years. She mentioned that various factors, such as learning motivation, nutritional intake, psychological well-being, and physiological conditions, can influence concentration levels. Nutrition, particularly key nutrients like protein, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids, plays a crucial role in brain development and cognitive function, especially memory. Ikeu highlighted the significance of nutrients like proteins, iron, and omega-3 for brain development and memory function. She also acknowledged the challenges related to unhealthy eating habits among children and limited access to nutritious foods in certain regions. Despite these challenges, Ikeu stressed the importance of collective efforts to support the successful implementation of the Free Nutritious Meals Program, believing that it will bring lasting benefits to future generations and society.
