Prabowo Subianto’s Global Influence as Indonesia’s Next President Highlighted by The Straits Times

President-elect Prabowo Subianto is expected to enhance Indonesia’s global influence significantly when he assumes office for the 2024-2029 term. The Straits Times, a leading media outlet in Singapore, recently published an article titled “Prabowo has big plans for Indonesia on the global stage,” highlighting the anticipation of a proactive foreign policy agenda under his leadership.

The article emphasized Prabowo’s proactive approach to international relations even before his inauguration, with diplomatic visits to over 10 countries within a seven-month period following his electoral victory. These visits included major powers such as China, Japan, Russia, and Australia.

Citizens and experts alike have expressed optimism about Prabowo’s presidency, noting his focus on advancing Indonesia’s role in global diplomacy. Many anticipate that he will enhance communication with other nations and potentially act as a mediator in conflict resolution.

Prabowo’s recent engagements, both as the current Minister of Defense and future president, demonstrate his strong commitment to international affairs. For instance, his stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict was highlighted during a humanitarian conference in Gaza, where he criticized Western nations and offered humanitarian support to Palestine.

Julia Lau, a senior fellow at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, mentioned that Prabowo is expected to take a more assertive role in shaping Indonesia’s foreign policy. However, she emphasized the need for a competent Ministry of Foreign Affairs to implement his ambitious vision successfully.

While there is optimism about Prabowo’s presidency, the Indonesian public remains watchful, hoping that he will fulfill his campaign promises and demonstrate concrete actions to address critics’ concerns.

As Prabowo prepares to assume office, there is anticipation about how he will position Indonesia on the global stage, navigate key geopolitical challenges, and promote the nation’s interests in an interconnected world.
